Jeffrey Tambor Quits Amazon’s “Transparent”Following Sexual Harassment Allegations

Transparent‘s fourth season launched on the Amazon streaming service on September 22 to much acclaim and anticipation from its faithful fans but shortly after its release, allegations of sexual harassments against its lead character were made. And now, perhaps justly, the hammer has fallen on one of our favorite streaming characters. Facing two accusations of sexual harassment by two team members of the Amazon’s produced award-winning series Transparent, leading man Jeffrey Tambor has decided not to return to the Amazon series.

Ever since the first allegations were made against Tambor by his former assistant and transgender actress Van Barnes earlier this month, Jill Soloway the show creator and the production company have been in discussions about writing the actor’s transgender Maura character out of the show for the upcoming fifth season.

Tambor has vehemently denied any wrongdoings and said,

“I’ve already made clear my deep regret if any action of mine was ever misinterpreted by anyone as being aggressive, but the idea that I would deliberately harass anyone is simply and utterly untrue,” Tambor asserted as well. “Given the politicized atmosphere that seems to have afflicted our set, I don’t see how I can return to Transparent.”

Shortly after Van Barnes’s accusation, a second woman came forward with a similar allegation. This time, it was, “Transparent” actress Trace Lysette, who accused Tambor of making lewd remarks and pushing himself against her against her will. Tambor also denied Lysette’s allegations.

Tambor’s resignation follows suit less than a month after Amazon Studios’ head Roy Price, also resigned after multiple accusations of sexual misconducts were made by Isa Hackett, a producer on “The Man in the High Castle,” the studio’s first series. A fifth season is in the works, but it’s hard to imagine Transparent without Maura, the soul of the series.

GLAAD, a U.S. non-governmental media monitoring organization founded by LGBT people in the media, issued a press statement:  “The show Transparent is bigger than one person and is home to some of the most talented trans people in Hollywood — both in front of the camera and behind. GLAAD stands with Trace in her hope that the inappropriate situations she and others endured on set will be remedied, and that future seasons will focus on more of the many brilliant characters that audiences love and care about.”

The Scope Weekly could reach neither Amazon nor Soloway for a response to Tambor’s announcement.
