Diddy Could Become the First Black Owner of a NFL Team

Sean “Diddy” Combs Could be Buying the Carolina Panthers & Become First African-American to Own an NFL Team

Hip Hop business mogul, Sean “Diddy” Combs wants to be the first African American owner of an NFL sports team; the Carolina Panthers. Now that the owner, Jerry Richardson, is stepping down due to allegations of sexual misconduct and racial remarks, the 48-year-old rapper sees this as a way to make history. Despite nearly 80% of NFL players being black, the only ethnic minority leader is the owner of the Jacksonville Jaguars: Shahid Khan. This is overwhelmingly disproportionate revealing the obvious discrepancies of diversity in the NFL hierarchy. Diddy’s desire to participate in this groundbreaking strategy has caught the attention of viewers and athletes such as Stephen Curry and Collin Kaepernick.

Diddy Says He Will Put Colin Kaepernick Back to Work – Colin Wants to Partner in Ownership

Despite Kaepernick’s talent, his political views in the league left him without a job and is currently not on the roster of any NFL team. On Sunday, Diddy posted a video on Instagram saying,

I will be the best NFL owner that you can imagine. I will immediately address the Colin Kaepernick situation and put him in the running for next year’s starting quarterback.

Diddy also shared a post on Twitter where he encouraged others to retweet and spread the word about his latest business interest. In the post, he was rocking a Panthers Jersey from 2003 and exclaimed that now was the time to get serious about black-owned investments.

Shortly after, Golden State Warriors Point guard, Stephen Curry, expressed interest in collaborating with Diddy on the investment. This makes sense considering that North Carolina is his home state. However, it may also have something to do with his relationship with President Trump. Curry rejected the president’s invitation to the White House earlier this year. He may be feeling upset about Trump’s continual encouragement for NFL teams to not tolerate players refusing to stand for the National Anthem and to “take a knee”; a movement initially started by Kaepernick.

The following Monday morning, Kaepernick replied with equal enthusiasm to Diddy’s gesture, expressing an interest in ownership of the team, more than playing.

Although Diddy is seriously speculating on the opportunity, Richardson said in an open letter on the team’s website that they “will not begin the sale process, nor will we entertain any inquiries, until the very last game is played.”

Diddy’s estimated net worth of $820 million makes him a feasible candidate for this move. However, it still requires approval from NFL gatekeepers who may still have a bad taste in their mouth because of the scandal that ensued Kaepernick’s first “take a knee”, and the loss of revenue and consequently, oppose a potential owner who wants to bring him back. Aside from former NFL player and businessman, Reggie Fowler, who attempted a similar deal in 2005; Diddy has the chance of creating the first majority black-owned team in the league.
