“Atlanta” Returns on FX as “Atlanta Robbin’ Season”

Fans of Donald Glover’s Emmy Award-winning “Atlanta” are in for a surprise. It’s coming back for Season 2 on FX, March 1 and it has a new name.

Bye bye “Atlanta” and hello “Atlanta Robbin’ Season” and think of it as the continuation of where season one left off, a good-humored comedy taking place in a parallel black Justin Bieber universe, where the protagonists try to survive on minimum wage and less, crime, big and small is a constant. So why the name change?

“We didn’t really look back at Season 1 for inspiration much,” Glover told the Television Critics Association Friday. “We always kept trying to do something different for the new season.

Glover, who won directing and acting Emmys in 2016, and his crews, the actors, and the show producers wouldn’t reveal much about specifics upcoming plots of the comedy’s new season, but the premise hasn’t changed. It will continue to feature two cousins striving to make a name for themselves in the  Atlanta music scene, with varying degrees of success and failures.

So what does Robbin’ Season refers to? Stephen Glover, a show producer and Donald’s brother said it is “about a time in the city near Christmas when people are flush with gifts and money or on the prowl for them.”

“It’s basically a bunch of crime,” Stephen Glover said. “People have money and people need money. You might get your package stolen off your front porch. It’s a very intense and desperate time. We wanted to make that a backdrop to the season.  We wanted to make a transition from their old lives to where they’re heading now.”

Adding to the description, Brian Tyree Henry who plays Alfred ‘Paper Boi’, said the new title refers to “that fear, that uncertainty of not knowing” how the world changes as the characters evolve after having some success.”

As far as the stars, they mentioned how their lives have changed too as a result of their onscreen success. Their new notoriety has made it near impossible to hang out at their favorite Atlanta joints without causing a commotion.

On the music front, Glover’s latest album, 2016’s “Awaken, My Love!”, is up for Album of the Year at this year’s Grammy Awards. And Glover is scheduled to perform at the January 28 ceremony.
