On March 2nd, 2018, lawyers Josh Binder, Jeremy Mohr, and Paul Rothenberg teamed together to create the new firm Rothenberg, Mohr & Binder LLP, representing the music and greater entertainment industries.  Each felt they were better working together in creating a higher-profile practice, courtesy of mixing their skills and elite clientele with offices in Beverly Hills, New York City, and Miami.

Rothenberg, having graduated Columbia University School of Law in 1998, subsequently worked as an attorney for Paul Weiss and Grubman Shire Meiselas & Sacks, before opening his own firm – Rothenberg, P.C. – focusing on entertainment representation.  He amassed notable clients in the music business, including D’Angelo, Charlie Puth, Trey Songz, A$AP Ferg, Tory Lanez, and Logic.  His partner, Jeremy Mohr, a graduate of California Western School of Law and former attorney at Hertz Lichtenstein & Young, LLP, represents celebrities such as Top DawgEntertainment, Kendrick Lamar, Charlie Puth, Logic, SZA, Marshmello, A$AP Ferg Solange Knowles, Kehlani Parrish, Julianne Hough, and Calvin Harris.

The third partner at the firm, Josh Binder, graduated from the Hebrew University of Jerusalem in 1996 before attending University of California San Diego, graduating with a B.A. in economics and political science.  He went on to receive his Juris Doctorate at the University of San Francisco, graduating in 2001 and opening his own firm in 2002.  He continues to work concurrently with Davis Shapiro & Lewit, LLP, and serves as the president of the charity organization The Guardians of The Los Angeles Jewish Home for the Aging.  To complete the team, Attorneys Tiffany Almy, Matt Cuttler, Kevin Eskowitz and Kwame Kandekore will also join the firm.

It may be the latter with respect to Binder that helps influence the humility Rothenberg, Mohr & Binder LLP wants to ensure.  In a joint press statement, the trio said: “While we are each proud of what we’ve separately built with our respective clients, we’re excited to combine our expertise, resources, and relationships to continue to raise the bar and better serve our clients.  We never take for granted the trust they place in us with their careers.”

Indeed, words like these are refreshing to hear in the era of the Me Too and Time’s Up movements, with many female players in the entertainment industry stepping forward with their accounts of harassment and abuse of power by representation.  A particularly pertinent example of this in music is the four-year legal dispute between pop star Kesha and music producer Dr. Luke, the former’s single Praying having become a musical staple of the Me Too movement.  As covered in a previous article by the Scope Weekly, the singer performed a live version of the song at the Grammys, notable this year like the Golden Globes for its solemnity and focus on social causes.  It will be interesting to see, in an era of increased accountability called upon powerful institutions, if Rothenberg, Mohr & Binder LLP lives up to their motto, and their record remains spotless.

At the time of publishing, we hadn’t hear back from the firm. If new information is provided, the article will be updated accordingly.
