During a festive dinner at The White House, it was revealed that South Korean President Yoon Suk Yeol possesses an impressive singing ability. The entertainment portion of the evening consisted of professionally performed Broadway musical numbers, culminating in a special encore featuring the singers of Don McLean’s great american classic song “American Pie.”
This song happens to be a favorite of South Korea President Yoon. After the performers finished, President Biden and President Yoon took the stage, where Biden encouraged Yoon to sing the first stanzas of the song. Yoon did so in perfect tune, leaving the crowd, including Angelina Jolie and Biden, astounded and delighted, respectively. President Biden told Yoon he had “no damn idea” he could sing and then presented him with a Gibson guitar signed by Don McLean.
Following President Biden presented President Yoon with a signed Gibson guitar, which elicited Yoon’s surprise at Biden’s finding out he could sing, Don McLean, the songwriter of “American Pie,” expressed his regret at not being able to attend the event and hopes to play the song with Yoon in the future. “I am honored that The White House had invited me to be at the event; however, I am in Australia on tour and could not be in two places at once,” says American Pie’s singer/songwriter Don McLean. “What a moment last night was as I watched the video clips. I wish I could have been there, but there always is a next time. I hope President Yoon learns how to play the guitar I signed so we can do the song together when we meet!”
