Felix Howard: Thanks for having us! Our story is a bit of a journey of opportunity. I’ve always had a passion for working with my hands—whether it was fixing things around the house or tackling small home improvement projects. Eventually, I realized I wanted to make this a career. Johanny and I started doing some smaller roofing jobs for family and friends, and it quickly grew into a full-fledged business. The name “Above and Beyond” comes from our desire to offer more than just a standard roofing service. We wanted to stand out by giving our clients more than they expected—whether that’s through attention to detail, exceptional cleanup, or just providing a higher level of care in every project we take on.

Johanny Howard: For me, it was about creating a business we could both be proud of. SW News: This question is for Felix. I came across a post on Nextdoor where you were depicted as a local hero fighting crime. Why don’t you tell us about it?
Felix Howard: Last Tuesday proved to be quite an eventful day on the job. While returning to my job site on Arlington Blvd in El Cerrito, I spotted a vehicle in the customer’s driveway that seemed out of place. Upon closer inspection, I realized that several of the company’s tools were inside the vehicle, which shouldn’t have been there. Acting swiftly, I blocked the vehicle in the driveway and contacted emergency services. Thanks to a quick response, both thieves were apprehended. Even though, the homeowner initially didn’t want to press charges, once he saw the damages to his property and how much worse things could have been, he decided otherwise. And the police officer told him, “These roofers took big risks to protect your property.”
SW News: That’s something many homeowners and business owners can appreciate! It’s rare to find a roofing team that’s so meticulous about the cleanup. What’s been the most rewarding part of running Above and Beyond Roofing and Tear off Services for you two?
Felix Howard: Witnessing our clients’ satisfaction upon completion of the job is the most fulfilling aspect for me. We’re not just contractors—we’re problem solvers. We only schedule roof repairs or installations during weather windows that allow us to complete the job without rushing or taking shortcuts.
Johanny Howard: Exactly. We also make sure to use the most durable materials for each project, based on the specific needs of the home or business.
