On December 1st, Jennifer Meyer appeared on podcast The Final Edit with Maeve Reilly to discuss how she and Tobey Maguire “overcame some big hurdles” after breaking up in 2016.
Actor Maguire and jeweler to the stars Meyer met in 2003 through mutual friends, and married in 2007 in Hawaii. Soon after, they had two kids together, daughter, Ruby, and son, Otis.
One day, Maguire asked Meyer what her dream job would be, and after stammering awhile, she finally came up with, “jewelry designer.” Fast forward to 2006, and megastar Jennifer Aniston is wearing Meyer’s now trademark leaf necklace, in the heart wrenching film, “The Break-Up.”
As Maguire’s star rose, with films like, “Pleasantville,” “Cider House Rules,” and “Sea Biscuit,” Meyer’s eponymous jewelry line took off.
However, after 10 years of marriage, they decided to go their separate ways—which proved to be a bumpy road.
On Reilly’s podcast, Meyer reveals that, at first, they kept it a secret to “protect the kids.” Meyer says, “It’s complicated when you’re breaking up after being together for 14 years and building your whole life.” Still living together, she admits, she was “living a double life.”
She says she had to remind herself, “You loved each other once. You cared about each other once.”
Unsure how to navigate post break-up life, Maguire and Meyer were at a loss. One day, while at friend Gwyneth Paltrow’s house, Meyer explains, Paltrow was in the kitchen “cooking quesadillas and the kids were sitting at the table doing their homework” and Paltrow’s ex-husband Chris Martin lets himself into Paltrow’s house, and says he was in the neighborhood and wanted to “help Apple with her homework.”
It was in that moment that Meyer knew there was a better way. She consulted with Paltrow about how she and Martin, who famously coined the term “conscious uncoupling” during their divorce in 2014, maintained such a cooperative relationship. Paltrow referred her to therapist, Dr. Habib Sadeghi.
Dr. Sadeghi taught them how to listen to one another, and helped them get to a place where they now “vacation together” and she even stayed with Maguire during the Covid-19 quarantine.
Meyer reveals, “I now have an ex-husband who is my best friend and would do anything for me, and I would do anything for him, anything in the world.”
Of conscious uncoupling she says, “all the people who made fun of it, the joke’s on them.”
Meyer opines, “My divorce has been one of my greatest teachers. It taught me patience.”
Now engaged to Geoffrey Ogunlesi (the son of Nigerian billionaire Adebayo Ogunlesi) who Meyer says, “dropped from the heavens into my life,” she ends the interview with this nugget: “Thank God for second chances.”
