A Holiday Tradition Returns: Gray Whale Watching Season Launches in Oxnard December 26

Holiday Season Highlights: Whale Watching and Coastal Adventures in Oxnard

Looking for memorable things to do this holiday season? Along the Southern California coast, winter marks the return of one of nature’s most spectacular events: gray whale watching off the shores of Oxnard. Beginning the day after Christmas, December 26, and continuing through mid- to late April, the annual migration offers a unique outdoor experience for families, visitors, and nature lovers.

Each year, an estimated 20,000 to 25,000 gray whales pass through the Santa Barbara Channel as they travel between their Arctic feeding grounds and the warm breeding lagoons of Baja California, Mexico. This stretch of ocean, bordered by Channel Islands National Park and the Channel Islands National Marine Sanctuary, is one of the best places in California to witness these massive marine mammals up close.

Whale watching excursions often reveal more than just gray whales. Dolphins frequently ride the wake of boats, while seals and sea lions haul out along nearby shores. The channel is also home to a diverse range of seabirds, including several protected and endangered species, making each trip a broader wildlife experience.

Visitors can book whale watching tours departing directly from Channel Islands Harbor. Island Packers, Ventura County’s official concessionaire to Channel Islands National Park, offers narrated, non-landing trips lasting approximately three and a half hours, with morning and afternoon departures available throughout the season. Channel Islands Sportfishing Center also provides half-day whale watching excursions on weekdays and weekends, running from December 26 through April 30.

Beyond whale watching, Oxnard offers plenty of ways to enjoy the holiday season outdoors. Uncrowded beaches, coastal trails, access to the Channel Islands, and a variety of local attractions make the city an appealing winter getaway. A range of accommodations—from mid-priced hotels to oceanfront and seaside stays—supports easy planning for overnight visits or weekend trips.
