HBO has officially renewed Real Time with Bill Maher through 2028, with Season 24 premiering January 23. After 24 seasons on the network, Maher shows no signs of slowing down, continuing his mix of sharp monologues, heated roundtables, and the ever-popular “New Rules.” The multi-season deal proves that, for better or worse, Maher’s brand of fearless commentary still draws viewers.

Yet even as the renewal makes headlines, Maher can’t hide his frustration over another awards snub. This year, he earned his first Golden Globe nomination for his stand-up special Bill Maher: Is Anyone Else Seeing This? — and he made it clear in advance he didn’t expect to win. On his Club Random podcast, Maher explained:
“Sweetheart, I’ve been nominated for 33 Emmys, and they would never give it to me… I speak freely, and this woke town f—ing hates that. And that’s okay. I’ve made my peace with that.”
Sure enough, British comedian Ricky Gervais took home the award, while presenter Wanda Sykes’s pointed quip toward Maher added to the spectacle.
Maher’s comments have reignited debates over Hollywood’s “woke” culture. To the host, the industry’s left-leaning sensibilities make it inhospitable to a comedian who says exactly what he thinks. Critics counter that Maher’s combative style has long been polarizing, and blaming “woke Hollywood” lets him sidestep deeper scrutiny about peer recognition.
In the end, Maher’s remarks reveal a paradox: a man who will continue on HBO for years to come, yet seems frustrated at winning recognition without taking home the trophy. Even after 24 seasons, the Golden Globe he didn’t win is less about Hollywood politics and more a reminder that not everyone can win—and nomination itself is a mark of accomplishment.
