ICE Agents Raise Pay and Benefits Concerns in Reddit Thread

ICE Agents Say They Haven’t Been Paid or Received Health Insurance, According to Reddit Posts

Multiple users identifying themselves as U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) agents say they have gone months without receiving pay, health insurance coverage, or promised bonuses, according to a discussion on Reddit.

The posts appeared in a profession-specific forum on Reddit, the pseudo-anonymous social platform founded by Steve Huffman and Alexis Ohanian in 2005. Agents described financial strain after starting work, with some reporting that they had not yet received base pay or benefits.

Some commenters blamed the partial government shutdown, while others said their situations appeared unrelated.

“I’ve been there for 3 months and still don’t have health insurance, and I have a sick girl,” one agent wrote.

Frustration over the agency’s signing bonus was also a recurring theme. In response to a post titled “Anyone get the bonus yet?”, one user wrote that the payment amounted to about $6,000 after taxes and was included in a regular paycheck, resulting in thousands of dollars withheld at once. Another user replied that they had not yet been paid their base salary.

The discussion highlights apparent confusion over the structure of ICE’s widely promoted $50,000 signing bonus. Under the terms of the contract, the bonus is paid in $10,000 installments over five years and is contingent on completing five years of service. Employees who leave before that time are required to repay any bonus funds already received. As a signing bonus, the payments are taxed at higher rates than ordinary wages. The comments suggest some agents may not have fully understood these terms when accepting their positions.

ICE, part of the Department of Homeland Security, is responsible for enforcing U.S. immigration laws and investigating criminal activity related to border security, human trafficking, and immigration fraud. Its agents work in high-risk and high-pressure roles, which the agency has tried to fill through signing bonuses and other incentives.

Partial government shutdowns have compounded these challenges. When Congress fails to pass appropriations bills, federal employees may face delayed paychecks, furloughs, or interruptions to benefits. These disruptions can create financial hardship, particularly for workers who rely on steady income and healthcare coverage.

Questions also remain about whether federal authorities could attempt to intervene in the online discussion. Reddit allows pseudonymous posting but shares user information with the government only in response to valid legal requests, such as subpoenas, court orders, or search warrants.

SW Newsmagazine contacted the White House and the Department of Homeland Security for comment, but they had not responded at the time of publication. The article will be updated if new information becomes available.

As federal employees, ICE agents are treated no differently than other federal workers, some of whom, according to employee advocates, have reported experiencing prolonged financial and professional duress under the current administration.
