Santa Barbara, California – Thursday night at the Arlington Theatre was electric. A sold-out crowd of 2,000 gathered under the ornate marquee for the 2026 Outstanding Performer of the Year tribute, honoring none other than Michael B. Jordan.
The evening offered a cinematic journey through Jordan’s career. From his breakout role on The Wire to memorable performances in Chronicle, Friday Night Lights, and Fruitvale Station, the tribute traced his rise. Jordan’s commanding work in the Creed series, culminating in his directorial debut with Creed III, and his roles in cultural touchstones like Black Panther and Just Mercy were celebrated. His decade-long collaboration with director Ryan Coogler—including their latest critically acclaimed film, Sinners—earned Jordan his first Academy Award nomination.

Before the tribute, the Arlington red carpet sparkled with talent. Filmmakers, actors, and participants representing a range of films posed for photos and shared their excitement. Walking the carpet were In The Room writer and director Brishkay Ahmed, filmmaker Nelofer Pazira Fisk, actress Sahar Parniyan, and documentary participants Mozhdah Jamalzadah and Vida Samadzai; The Long Spring writer and director Olly Ginelli, actor Warren Mendy, production designers Maddie Hunter and Josie Hunter, and producer Francesca Fogg; What We Carry director and co-writer Jessie Anthony, producer Kat McDermott, and co-writer and film subject Katrinka Scott. Also present were Two Ugly People director Peter Skinner with producers Orla Doyle and Julia Gardell; On the End director Ari Selinger alongside producers Harris Gurney and Matthew Heymann; and All of the Above director Allison Walsh, producer Lily Qi, editor Alanna Schmelter, and documentary participants John Camardella and Lily Kaya.
Short-film creators added to the star-studded scene. Among them were She Chose War director Sarah Moshman; Dongmei writer and director Rubing Zhang with producer Zhaoyu Shi; Behind the Mask writer-director Catherine Andre and director Alexandru Mihail; Fly on the Wall (La mosca en la pared) actress-producer Rossana De Leon and executive producer Florencia De Leon; and The Lonely Life Of Lint director and animator Sarah Sklar. Their presence highlighted SBIFF’s dedication to both emerging and established voices.

The evening continued inside the Arlington with a screening of Sinners. Following the film, Lindo and Jordan joined Roger Durling for a lively Q&A, discussing the craft and challenges behind some of Jordan’s most iconic performances.
Thursday night was more than a tribute to one actor—it was a celebration of storytelling itself. Fans left inspired, having witnessed the convergence of talent, charisma, and cinematic craft, all under the glow of Santa Barbara’s spotlight.
