Santa Barbara International Film Festival Returns with Star Power, Global Premieres, and Expanded Programming

Santa Barbara is alive with the buzz of red carpets, star-studded premieres, and international filmmakers as the 41st Santa Barbara International Film Festival unfolds from February 4 to 14. A key stop on the awards-season circuit, SBIFF pairs world premieres, industry conversations, and high-profile tributes with the intimate atmosphere that has long defined the festival—set against the town’s signature Spanish architecture, vibrant culinary scene, and breathtaking coastal views.

This year’s festival features 46 world premieres and 80 U.S. premieres, representing filmmakers from 50 countries. The festival opened February 4 with the U.S. premiere of A Mosquito in the Ear, written and directed by Nicola Rinciari and starring Jake Lacy, Nazanin Boniadi, and Ruhi Pal. Closing night on February 14 spotlights the U.S. premiere of Laundry (Uhlanjululo), written and directed by Zamo Mkhwanazi and starring Ntobeko Sishi and Tracy September. Among the many premieres, California Scenario, a feature drama directed by James Takata and co-written with Dara Resnik, made its world premiere. The indie film explores familial truth, trauma, and connection, following divorced parents navigating reconciliation at Isamu Noguchi’s iconic garden, with performances by Will Yun Lee and Abby Miller.

Opening Night and Major Tributes

Opening night set a celebratory tone as Adam Sandler received the Maltin Modern Master Award, SBIFF’s highest honor recognizing an individual who has enriched culture through exceptional achievements in film. Dustin Hoffman presented the award to a completely sold-out audience at the Arlington Theatre. The red carpet drew notable attendees, including Jane Fonda, as well as members of the Gaslit team—actress Connie Britton, director Katie Camosy, and film subjects Diane Wilson and Jenny Espino. Also in attendance were Dear Lara director Lara St. John alongside producer Patrick Hamm, executive producer Stephen Judson, associate producer Sanjana Bhambhani, consulting producer Christy McGill, and editor Christie Herring.

On February 6, Ethan Hawke was honored with the American Riviera Award, which celebrates artists whose work exemplifies independence and creative excellence. The award was presented by Jeff Bridges during a tribute held at the Arlington Theatre.

Another marquee moment arrived on Monday, February 9, when the festival presented the Hammond Cinema Vanguard Award honoring Leonardo DiCaprio, Sean Penn, and Benicio Del Toro  One Battle After Another. The Vanguard Award recognizes artists whose work consistently pushes creative boundaries and shapes the contemporary cinematic landscape, further cementing SBIFF’s role as a forum for celebrating influential film careers.

Additional Honors and In-Person Appearances

SBIFF’s tribute lineup also included the Virtuosos Award, celebrating standout, Oscar-nominated performances. Inga Ibsdotter Lilleaas and Wunmi Mosaku joined the previously announced honorees for their work in Sentimental Value and Sinners. Additional honorees appearing throughout the festival included Jacob Elordi, Chase Infiniti, Amy Madigan, Wagner Moura, Renate Reinsve, Sydney Sweeney, Teyana Taylor, Jeremy Allen White, Michael B. Jordan, and others.

Kate Hudson received the Arlington Artist of the Year Award for her performance in Song Sung Blue. Delroy Lindo appeared following a screening of Sinners on February 12, while producer Jerry Bruckheimer attended a February 5 screening of F1.

Retrospectives, Panels, and Industry Access

The festival also featured retrospectives honoring Jessie Buckley, who appeared in person following a free screening of Hamnet, and filmmaker Julian Schnabel, leading up to the U.S. premiere of In the Hand of Dante. Schnabel was in attendance for a post-screening Q&A, with the retrospective also showcasing Basquiat, Before Night Falls, The Diving Bell and the Butterfly, and At Eternity’s Gate.

Industry panels rounded out the festival’s educational programming, including a Women’s Panel moderated by Madelyn Hammond, a Casting Directors Panel moderated by Gold Derby Editor-in-Chief Debra Birnbaum, a Producers Panel moderated by Nicole Sperling, an International Directors Panel moderated by Roger Durling, and a Writers Panel moderated by Anne Thompson.

A New Home for Cinema

The 41st edition of SBIFF also marked the grand opening of the McHurley Film Center, a new venue designed to support year-round screenings, filmmaker Q&As, and community programming. Hundreds of festival screenings took place at the McHurley Film Center, significantly expanding SBIFF’s footprint and reinforcing its commitment to the filmmaking community beyond the annual festival dates.

With its expansive international lineup, major tributes, in-depth panels, and new state-of-the-art venue, the 41st Santa Barbara International Film Festival once again delivered a vibrant celebration of cinema—blending awards-season prestige with meaningful access to the artists shaping today’s film landscape.

“If art is to nourish the roots of our culture, society must set the artist free to follow his vision wherever it takes him,” said President John F. Kennedy in a 1963 Amherst College speech.
