Amy Madigan wins her first Oscar for “Weapons”

LOS ANGELES — Amy Madigan won the Oscar for Best Supporting Actress at the 98th Academy Awards for her role in Weapons. The 98th Academy Awards, honoring films from 2025, took place on Sunday, March 15, 2026, at the Dolby Theatre in Hollywood. Last year’s Supporting Actress winner, Zoe Saldaña, returned to the stage to announce the next addition to the category’s storied legacy. When Madigan’s name was revealed, she walked to the stage to a standing ovation.

Madigan delivered a nuanced and haunting performance as Aunt Gladys in the horror film, anchoring the story’s emotional and thematic weight.

Thanks to my beloved Ed. None of this would mean anything without you by my side

The win marked Madigan’s first Academy Award. While this nomination was her second Oscar nod — following her first nomination decades earlier — it was her first win. She also earned a Golden Globe nomination for this role but did not win at that ceremony. Madigan’s Critics Choice and Critics Circle recognition underscored a late-career resurgence.

First and foremost, I just have to thank Zach Cregger, our writer and director. He just wrote a dream part. And when I…he let me just grab it by the throat, and we had a ball. You know, I want to thank Miri, who was on set all the time, our producer. And of course, you know, Warner Bros., and New Line, and Pam and Mike. But, you know, it’s all the people who’ve helped me get here. You know, you’re just…as you can tell, I’m a little flummoxed. You know, I mean…I also wanna just give tribute to Elle, and Inga, and Wunmi and Teyana. Oh, my legs are shaking. Because when I was doing all the Weapons stuff, I was kinda traveling on my own. People from “One Battle,” and people from “Sinners,” and all the films, they just kinda gave me a hug and said, “Yeah, come on in. Let us know you, and you can know us.” So I think that…but most of all, I want to thank my beautiful daughter Lily, her husband Sean. And of course, all the dogs. But, the most important is my beloved Ed, who’s been with me forever. And that’s a long ass time. And none of this would mean anything if he wasn’t by my side. So, thank you very much. I’m very overwhelmed.

Best Supporting Actress Awards Season Recap

All five Best Supporting Actress nominees came into the Oscars with strong awards season traction. Teyana Taylor led the group with a Golden Globe win for Best Supporting Actress, affirming her frontrunner status. Elle Fanning and Inga Ibsdotter Lilleaas were both Golden Globe nominees in the same supporting category for Sentimental Value, though neither took home that prize. Amy Madigan also earned a Golden Globe nomination for her role in Weapons, while Wunmi Mosaku’s performance in Sinners was widely celebrated by critics and precursor groups, even though she did not receive a Golden Globe nomination. Heading into the Oscars, all five were considered award‑season standouts with a mix of major nominations and wins behind them.
