California’s governor’s race has taken another unexpected turn. After Eric Swalwell’s exit, Steve Hilton’s rise, and Xavier Becerra’s grassroots surge, San Jose Mayor Matt Mahan is now emerging as a major contender following a strong debate performance and backing from tech billionaires. His rapid ascent is reshaping the Democratic field while raising new questions about Big Tech influence and voter concerns over affordability ahead of the June primary.
California’s 2026 governor’s race has become a case study in political volatility. Eric Swalwell exited early after sexual misconduct allegations, despite leading Democratic polling. Then Steve Hilton surged across multiple surveys, reshaping assumptions about a Republican path to the general election. In response, Xavier Becerra gained ground, propelled by a late-forming grassroots push that briefly reconsolidated Democratic energy.
Now, another disruption is rewriting the race—one SW Newsmagazine’s newsroom did not anticipate. Matt Mahan has vaulted into contention, fueled by debate momentum, billionaire backing, and a rapidly shifting electorate. A poll from Nextstar Media Group, which hosted the debate, shows a post-debate surge for Mahan. But the poll has drawn scrutiny, with reports that some respondents were able to vote more than once.
The Debate That Changed the Equation
As covered in SW Newsmagazine’s debate night reporting, the candidates drew sharper contrasts on policy and leadership, but the defining fault line centered on experience versus electability. In that exchange, Mahan found unexpected traction.
His performance, measured and managerial in tone, appears to have resonated with undecided voters who remain a decisive bloc, roughly 20 percent of the electorate as of mid-April.
Within hours, Mahan signaled momentum publicly, pointing to a surge in engagement and support.
“The debate didn’t just clarify differences. It created an opening,” said one Democratic strategist based in Los Angeles. “Mahan walked through it.”
Billionaires Step In, and Raise the Stakes
That opening is now being reinforced by a powerful and polarizing force. Following Swalwell’s departure, a network of California tech billionaires moved quickly to back Mahan, transforming his campaign’s financial footing.
Among those reported to be supporting him are Reed Hastings and Michael Moritz, signaling a coordinated effort from Silicon Valley’s upper tier.
“California billionaires are stepping up their efforts to boost San Jose Mayor Matt Mahan…”
“…rushing into the vacuum left by Eric Swalwell’s abrupt exit…”
The timing is critical. Just days earlier, Mahan was polling in the single digits. The infusion of financial support, combined with post-debate visibility, has altered the trajectory of his candidacy almost overnight.
“Money alone doesn’t win races, but it can define them,” said a Sacramento-based political consultant. “Mahan is now in a position to scale his message very quickly.”
SW Newsmagazine has reached out to Matt Mahan’s campaign for comment but has not received a response at the time of publication.
Polling Whiplash and a Fragmented Field
The speed of change in the race is striking.
Recent April polling had Hilton leading between roughly 16 and 20 percent, with Chad Bianco close behind in the mid-teens. On the Democratic side, Becerra had surged into the low teens after Swalwell’s exit, while Tom Steyer and Katie Porter remained competitive.
Now, Mahan has overtaken both Steyer and Becerra in emerging indicators, creating a volatile Democratic lane with no clear frontrunner.
“There is no clear Democratic frontrunner, but Mahan is closer than anyone else to assembling a winning coalition,” said a pollster who tracks California races. “The question is whether that coalition holds under scrutiny.”
Meanwhile, the Republican field remains comparatively stable, raising the real possibility that one GOP candidate secures a top-two slot in California’s primary system.
The Risk: Big Tech vs. Cost of Living
Mahan’s rise comes with a built-in political tension. California voters continue to rank cost of living, housing affordability, and everyday expenses as their top concerns.
His growing alignment with wealthy tech donors risks clashing directly with that reality.
“Californians are not looking for a governor who represents the ultra wealthy,” said a labor-aligned political consultant. “They are looking for someone who understands rent, groceries, and utility bills.”
This dynamic is likely to define the next phase of the race. Mahan’s campaign has emphasized efficiency, housing production, and pragmatic governance. Opponents are expected to frame him as too closely tied to corporate interests.
“There’s a disconnect voters are already picking up on,” said a labor-aligned strategist. “If your campaign is powered by the ultra wealthy, you have to work twice as hard to prove you’re fighting for everyone else.”
A Race That Refuses to Settle
With Betty Yee out of the race and Swalwell’s departure still reverberating, the Democratic field remains unsettled. Each shift has triggered another, creating a cascade effect that has kept voters and campaigns off balance.
Mahan is now the latest, and perhaps most unexpected, beneficiary of that instability.
“This is no longer a linear race,” said a veteran pollster. “It’s a series of shocks, and Mahan is the latest one.”
What Comes Next
With the June 2 primary approaching, the stakes are accelerating. Roughly one in five voters remains undecided. Financial resources are consolidating. Messaging is sharpening.
For Mahan, the opportunity is clear, but so is the risk.
“Momentum is real, but so is backlash,” said a veteran campaign adviser. “If Mahan becomes defined by his supporters instead of his policies, that momentum could stall just as quickly as it started.”
In a race defined by upheaval, Matt Mahan has become its newest center of gravity. Whether that position holds may determine not just the Democratic field but also the shape of California’s political future.
