Summer is firmly here, and it’s hot, hotter than we’ve seen in quite a while, with heatwaves sweeping across the country. I went looking for skincare that could refresh and replenish my skin without draining my wallet. Where did I go? The Trader Joe’s aisle! What I discovered was a one-of-a-kind Watermelon Overnight Face Mask and a Retinol Night Serum. Together, they cost less than $20. Come along on my latest skincare adventure.
If you’ve been following my skincare reviews for any length of time, you’re probably used to seeing me test high-end formulas with equally high-end price tags. You also know I have one non-negotiable rule: I only review cruelty-free products. So yes, you are indeed reading my review of a skincare haul from the grocery store aisle.
With inflation continuing to stretch household budgets, luxury skincare is often one of the first indulgences to get crossed off the shopping list. I wanted to see whether affordable products could still deliver real results without compromising on quality or ethics. To my surprise, the answer was waiting right next to the produce section at Trader Joe’s.
For under $20 combined, I picked up the Retinol Night Serum with Baobab Seed Oil (0.3% retinol) and the seasonal Watermelon Overnight Face Mask. Both products meet my cruelty-free standards, meaning neither the finished formulas nor their ingredients are tested on animals. Together, they create a simple nighttime routine that pairs the benefits of retinol with plenty of hydration to help minimize dryness and irritation.
The Dynamic Duo: How They Work Together
When I build an evening skincare routine, I want products that deliver results while keeping my skin comfortable. Retinol is one of the most effective anti-aging ingredients available, but it can also leave skin dry or flaky. This affordable pair follows a classic “Treat & Seal” approach that impressed me from the very first week.
The Treatment (Retinol Night Serum): The 0.3% retinol concentration hits a sweet spot for encouraging skin cell turnover and supporting collagen production, helping soften fine lines and improve uneven texture over time. Baobab seed oil adds nourishing fatty acids that help reduce some of the dryness often associated with retinol. Because it’s a fairly potent formula, I use it every third night and always wear sunscreen the following day. In my experience, it performed just as well as retinol serums costing several times more, without the irritation I’ve experienced from some other brands.
The Seal (Watermelon Overnight Face Mask): After applying the serum, I smooth on the Watermelon Overnight Face Mask as the final step. Ingredients like sodium hyaluronate, squalane, and watermelon extracts provide an extra layer of hydration while helping lock in moisture overnight. I applied a generous layer before bed and woke up with skin that felt incredibly soft and velvety.
A Double-Duty Formula: The 10-Minute Reset vs. The Nightly Veil
One of my favorite things about the Watermelon Overnight Face Mask is how versatile it is. Depending on what your skin needs, it works equally well as a quick pick-me-up or as an overnight treatment.
| Application Method | How to Use | Skin Action & Performance | Best For |
| The 10-Minute Flash Facial | Apply a generous layer to clean, dry skin. Leave on for 10 minutes, then rinse with lukewarm water. | Provides a quick boost of hydration along with antioxidant vitamins A and C, while a touch of glycolic acid gently helps smooth the skin’s surface. | Pre-makeup prep, a quick skin refresh, or those with sensitive skin looking for a lighter treatment. |
| The Deep Overnight Mask | Apply a thin, even layer as the final step of your nighttime routine in place of your regular moisturizer. | The lightweight gel-cream absorbs quickly and helps seal in moisture while you sleep. | Anyone wanting to wake up with softer, plumper, well-hydrated skin. |
Sensory Realities: A Pleasant Surprise
One of the biggest surprises was how different the Watermelon Overnight Face Mask was from what I expected. With its playful “My, What-a-Melon!” packaging and watermelon ingredients, I assumed it would smell like candy.
Instead, the fragrance is subtle and surprisingly elegant, leaning more toward a soft floral scent than an overly sweet fruit fragrance. Despite all the watermelon-inspired ingredients, it barely smells like watermelon at all.
The texture was another pleasant surprise. Rather than leaving behind the sticky film I’ve experienced with some sleeping masks, it glides on like a silky gel-cream and absorbs quickly. The result is skin that feels refreshed rather than weighed down. It reminded me of biting into a cold slice of watermelon on a scorching summer afternoon—cooling, refreshing, and exactly what my skin needed. This duo proved to me that you don’t have to spend a fortune to enjoy an effective, cruelty-free skincare routine all summer long.
